A passion for learning inside and outside the classroom comes through inquiry, study, debate, self-challenge and involvement.  We also learn from one another: faculty, administrators, staff, parents and community members work together towards the continual refinement and improvement in the way we learn and share knowledge.

As set out in our mission statement, we encourage students and teachers to “dedicate their   minds to inquiry”.  By inquiry we mean objectivity as well as openness to new ideas and information so that they can participate in and benefit from a life of learning and progressive understanding.

We nurture each student to achieve his or her full potential, with an emphasis on the development of all aspects of a student’s talents and capabilities.  In adopting this approach, we focus on each child’s whole life and circumstances and the links between individual issues and other aspects of their lives.

Wherever possible, HKIS considers ways in which children can be involved in decisions that affect them.  When our students leave us, they take with them the requisite skills and disposition to be lifelong learners.

Our teachers are dedicated and committed educators.  They join our school because of a shared commitment to excellence in teaching.  Teachers at HKIS grow personally and professionally from the opportunities we provide, to be innovative educators.

Teachers are available to students many hours beyond class schedules.  They participate in coaching, advising student groups, enrichment activities and school trips.  It is common to see faculty and students sharing a coffee at Ritazza, the high school coffee shop, while discussing a problem or enjoying light conversation.

HKIS’ success in teaching relies on a strong curriculum, the personal and professional strength and commitment of our faculty, a global perspective, and a pleasant learning environment.

The number of students in each class is kept low, supporting a learning environment that is conducive for class discussions and one-to-one teacher to student interaction time.  Teachers make time to get to know students, bond with them and respond to their individual needs.

HKIS' challenging educational experience helps each student to develop intellect, imagination, independance and responsibility, and an identity which can combine faith and coherent values.

We believe that all humans have a spiritual nature beyond the physical realm.  "Grounded in the Christian faith, and respecting the spiritual lives of all" (HKIS Mission Statement) is inclusive of learning about the Christian faith and other world religions.

We enroll students of many different faiths, and they often find that ongoing dialogue of diverse perspectives invites personal growth in identity and inquiry that leads to deeper understanding.
