Our Mission
Dedicating our minds to inquiry, our hearts to compassion, and our lives to service and global understanding An American-style education grounded in the Christian faith and respecting the spiritual lives of all
Extending from our Mission for HKIS we have identified six areas of personal development that enable us to nurture our students to achieve their full potential academically, spiritually and as individuals of character. They are our Student Learning Results, and are defined below:
| |
Academic Excellence
Students will achieve their intellectual potential by striving for and attaining the highest standards of academic excellence. Using this approach, students are required to acquire and adapt information, think critically and creatively, apply their knowledge effectively, communicating clearly through the written and spoken word.
Spirituality
Students will understand and respect Christianity and other religions and will identify and develop their own spiritual identity. Spirituality at HKIS requires students to display understanding of the concepts and practices of Christianity, and recognize connections between their beliefs, principles and ethical conduct, and those of other world religions.
Character Development
Students will demonstrate respectful and caring attitudes at school and in the community, as well as the courage to stand up for what is right. Students demonstrate caring and respect by identifying others’ needs and looking for ways to help, interacting appropriately, showing consideration in all areas, and displaying the courage to support and pursue what is right.
Self-Motivated Learning
Students willingly apply a variety of learning and motivation strategies throughout their learning process. Students will demonstrate persistence and involvement by consistently applying a variety of learning and motivation strategies to achieve solutions, and maintain or increase effort in the face of difficulty, developing judgment and understanding risk.
Contributing to Society
Students will develop the skills they need to form genuine relationships in our diverse society and to make contributions to our community. Students will demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills by working and connecting with others to build cross-cultural relationships, resolve conflicts and achieve goals. This is demonstrated through voluntary participation in service, contributing time, talent or money to the global community.
Chinese Culture
Students will gain an understanding of China and an appreciation of the Chinese Culture. Students are required to demonstrate understanding of the history, geography, politics and current events concerning China; its philosophy and religion, language, arts, traditions and life-styles; and to experience Chinese culture through personal experience and contact with communities of Greater China.
