New Student & Parent Orientation

We are pleased to offer a Middle School New Student and Parent Orientation on January 12, 2012.  The outcome for this event is for our new community members to:

  • meet the Middle School administration and Student Services team;
  • have an opportunity to connect with other new families;
  • receive information about the Middle School and get to know your way around;
  • have time to purchase school uniforms and supplies; and
  • participate in course placement activities in order to complete schedules

Our new students can also expect to meet some of our student leaders and participate in welcoming activities with our counselors.  This a wonderful way to meet people and to get your questions answered before the first day of school.

Placement Information:

  • All 7th and 8th grade students will all take a math placement assessment during their orientation day.
  • 6th-8th grade students who are registering for a modern language elective and have previous experience will also take a modern language assessment.
  • 6th-8th grade students who are registering for an instrumental music class who have previous experience will take a music assessment (you must bring your instrument to the orientation day).

Class Scheduling
New students need to register for their second semester elective courses. Below you will find a 2011/2012 Registration Card. The card is self-explanatory and lists the number of courses that are available to each student.

6th grade students are required to take: PE (every other day), a music elective (every other day), a modern language elective (every day), and an exploratory elective called the "SPICE rotation" (every day).  Grade 6 students choose their music elective and their modern language elective.  They will be placed into PE and a SPICE class.

7th grade students are required to take: PE (every other day) and a semester of religion (every other day).  All other electives are by choice. Please limit your elective courses to a total of three semesters of study.  The fourth elective is the mandatory PE class.  As space permits, we will place new students into the second semester religion courses. Students should indicate both their first choices and their alternative choices.  Please note that we will do our best to place students into their first choices, but cannot make any guarantees because many classes are already full.

1:1 Laptop Program at HKIS
HKIS is a 1:1 laptop program first-and-foremost to enhance student learning. The 1:1 laptop environment standardizes the “learning environment” between home and school and makes possible greater use of multimedia and interactive learning materials. It also supports independent learning, allowing our students to find audiences for their work, to solve problems together, and better prepare them for the challenges and opportunities presented in the 21st Century.

The one-to-one laptop program allows students to learn the skills they will require in the modern workplace; namely – innovation, adaptivity to change, and being technologically literate.

In addition, a 1:1 laptop environment ensures that HKIS is at the cutting-edge of educational philosophy, technology and delivery. It supports our school’s strategy to provide innovative and flexible educational technology solutions in the classroom and beyond.

Technology Fee
In the 2010-2011 school year, HKIS commenced its 1:1 laptop program for Grades 5-12.  This program involves the addition of a technology fee from students in grades 5 through to 12 once every three years.  The technology fee covers the full cost of a Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz computer with 4GB of RAM and 250GB hard-drive, plus site-licensed software specifically selected to support the HKIS educational program.  Please click here for additional information.

Laptop Distribution Information
HKIS is running a two-hour distribution session on the afternoon of Friday, January 13 from 1:00-3:00pm.  A parent MUST accompany each student. The sessions contain information for both student and parent concerning expectations of laptop use at HKIS, as well as procedures for service and support. Families with children in the Middle School and High School may choose to attend either session (you do not need to attend both). The session is in the Middle School seminar rooms on the 2nd floor, Room # 200A, B & C.

Technology 101 Sessions for Students
All new students are required to attend a series of four Technology 101 Sessions held after school.  These sessions are intended to provide our new students with the knowledge and skills to transition smoothly into our 1:1 program.  Students who have previous Mac experience also need to attend because they will learn about programs that are used specifically at HKIS. These sessions are from 3:15 - 4:10 p.m. on January 17, 19 & 31 and February 2.
