Mathematics provides the tools for the intelligent processing of information. The emphasis is on the student, performing individual and collaborative problem solving, reasoning skills, modeling, making connections and the effective representation of information.

The graduation requirement in mathematics is 3 years, with the expectation that incoming students have already completed Pre-Algebra. The Mathematics Department considers the ‘core’ curriculum to be: Algebra I, Geometry, and Advanced Geometry. However, as HKIS is a college preparatory school, students are advised to study mathematics each year of high school, and for students desirous of a more rigorous mathematical preparation, the department offers courses through AB and BC Calculus, and Statistics at Advanced Placement level.

The Mathematics Program

The goal of the science department is to prepare students to function in the technological society of today and tomorrow. Courses are intended to develop an understanding the ways in which science, technology and society influence one another.

HKIS science courses are divided into specific disciplines to meet students’ interests, needs and ability levels. Two units of science, one of which must be biology, are required during the student’s high school career.

The Science Education Program

Learning languages encourages students to respect and understand other cultures, enhances divergent thinking and self-motivated learning. It also helps students to participate and interact more effectively in the ever-changing global community.

Placement is based upon interview and/or placement test, and all courses are sequential. Highly motivated students may pursue a second modern language with the approval of the Department Head and their current language teacher.

Effective communication skills will be assessed using a variety of performance-based assessments such as: role-plays, projects, creative writing, class discussions, debates, oral presentations and portfolios.

The Mandarin Program
Two streams of study are offered in Mandarin dependent upon the student’s proficiency in speaking, reading and writing Mandarin, and placement in the Regular stream or the Accelerated stream is based solely on our placement tests and the recommendation of HKIS Mandarin teachers.

The Regular stream emphasis is on the listening and speaking of Hanyu, Pinyin tones, using major themes of greetings, personal background information, daily routine, leisure activities and visiting friends. Progression through the Levels reinforces the learning with stress on effective communication and expanding the themes.

The Accelerated Mandarin stream is for students who already speak a dialect of Mandarin, but may not read and write Chinese. Students are prepared for reading and writing in Mandarin/Pinyin, and communication skills including the reading of authentic materials, are reinforced through expanding themes through the Levels.

The art department offers an interdisciplinary multi-strand framework in which students can study art and design. Students are free to choose which streams they wish to pursue, the entry level for each stream being level one. Students progress through the levels sequentially, and those interested in a career in art and design are encouraged to take as many classes as possible to develop their artistic skills before entry into AP Studio Art class in their senior year.

The Art Program Framework is shown below:

Each student at HKIS is required to take at least ½ credit in Information Technology. This can be achieved with Technology Literacy, Programming in Visual Basic, or Introduction to Video Production.
