The literacy curriculum developed and implemented in the Lower Primary is a standards-based curriculum, which aligns with each of the stages of literacy development.

We adopted Primary Literacy Standards, which were developed as part of the New Standards Project of the National Council on Education and the Economy.  These literacy standards and benchmarks are internationally competitive and appropriate for our student body; providing a common language among all of our teachers, students and parents, and enabling appropriate individual support to be identified for each student.

All four Divisions within HKIS use Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, written by the international professional organization, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and provides for the growth of mathematics across the Grades.  At Primary Grades our program also aligns with the principles and standards set out by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. (NAEYC).

In Primary Grades this includes:

NAEYC Guidelines for Appropriate Practices in Primary Grades
  •  Involve active participation with each other, adults & materials
  •  Include varied classroom groupings
  •  Promote materials and activities that are concrete, real and relevant
  •  Encourage exploration, discovery, and problem solving
  •  Include projects and experiences that extend children’s ideas
  •  Respond to their questions and engage them in conversations
  •  Integrate many subject areas
  •  Promote social skills, inquiry, independence and choice
  •  Develop self-esteem and positive feelings towards learning and self-control
  •  Encourage family members to help in the classroom, respond to, and respect individual differences in ability and interests
  •  Monitor through regular observation and narration
  •  Record progress and report to parents

Religious education in Primary focuses on Christianity in the classroom, with key Bible stories and verses, cluster chapels, devotions, songs and prayer time.  In addition, each Grade level focuses on one of the major world religions:

Reception One
Reception Two
Grade 1
Grade 2

Buddhism
Hinduism
Islam
Judaism

Students investigate different religions through celebrations, discussions, artifacts, and reading.

Social studies and science teaching adopts an inquiry based approach, using observation; data collection, recording and interpretation; predicting, classifying, and drawing conclusions, all within ‘hands-on’ practical activities.  Working together students develop skills including reasoning, problem-solving, goal setting and decision-making.

Lower Primary students take part in Chinese language instruction as part of their normal daily studies.  Classes also delve into the Chinese culture to further strengthen the links between learning the language and gaining a greater appreciation of the country and its people.

Class activities include games, song, dance, cooking, arts/crafts, oral dialogue, and excursions, designed to immerse students in the use of Putonghua.  Parents are encouraged to participate in home-works and project activities.

Students use a range of technologies to support their learning within the classroom, and the Technology Coordinator and Librarian work closely with teachers and children to develop their IT literacy skills.

Teachers and the librarian work closely together to develop the children’s library skills, demonstrating techniques to search information for research projects.

In Lower Primary we use the Scott Foresman Silver Burdett ‘Making Music’ series, and the Orff Schulwerk approach to music teaching.

The curriculum provides opportunities to explore music through singing, listening, movement; and playing instruments including wooden xylophones and glockenspiels.

Our physical education program concentrates on personal fitness and basic sports skills using the following:

Body Management
Using age-appropriate climbing equipment children learn body awareness, inversion, exploration of risk, and gain body strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.
Maniplulatives
Children are introduced to spatial awareness, creativity, movement and rhythmic activity, developing hand-eye coordination, dexterity and timing.
Swimming An important life skill where children experience water adjustment, water entry and exit, buoyancy control, breathing, stroke correction, and personal safety in the water.
Ball Skills
Ball skills help children learn how to play with partners and groups, and develop spatial awareness, accuracy, hand-eye coordination and timing.
