The core subjects are: Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Religion and Physical Education.
Language Arts
Here, students throughout the Grades increasingly understand the reading, writing and research-processes, and follow the Step Up to Writing method to develop their writing skills in different genres. Speaking and listening is further developed through storytelling, debate and presentation.
Social Studies
In social studies Grade 6, students will learn about different world societies, and their survival needs; and discover how civilizations are shaped by their geography and culture.
In higher Grades students will explore the economic and political influences on civilizations, and US history. Students will present their ideas using writing, speech, and visual aids.
Mathematics
Through Grade 6, Students engage in a variety of activities, technology and real life solving situations, to enhance math thinking. In Grade 7, Math 7 and Math 7 Plus enable students to explore Algebra and develop proportional reasoning, deductive reasoning, and dimensional awareness. Critical thinking is further developed through problem-solving opportunities.
Grade 8 students pursue Pre-Algebra, and Algebra, where those who successfully complete the course will be recommended for Geometry in High School. NOTE: Honors Algebra is also available in Grade 8, and students who successfully complete the course will be recommended for honors Geometry in High School.
Science
Students engage in inquiry-based learning activities, using instruments and carrying out laboratory experiments to explore what is happening on our planet earth. Topics include biodiversity, ecosystems, properties of matter, and weather.
At Grade 8 students are prepared for the High School science courses, focusing upon genetics, astronomy, chemistry of matter, and energy.
Physical Education
The P-E program includes a broad range of sports and physical activities, with a major focus on swimming education, fitness education, movement education, and adventure learning. The program is designed to promote physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing.
Activities available include: sumo wrestling, gymnastics, soccer, field hockey, flag football, netball, fitness, badminton, volleyball, swimming, project adventure, water adventure, circus, dance, track & field, basketball and softball.
Religion
Students study the history, people, rituals, celebrations, sacred texts, and rites of passage of the five major world religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Connections and key concepts between the different religions will be explored, and students encouraged to develop and reflect upon their own spiritual identity.
The table below shows the core subjects and the total range of elective subjects, from which students may make their individual selection, with parental and faculty guidance. Some electives have pre-requisites for approval.
