The Aquatics Department’s mission is to provide a developmentally appropriate swimming program for students at Hong Kong International School. Swim lessons and a variety of aquatics activities are differentiated for level and ability, thus ensuring students experience success, enjoyment, improvement of their skills, and development of their knowledge and understanding of water safety concepts. By providing such learning opportunities, students are encouraged to pursue lifelong fitness and enjoyment.
HKIS Aquatics Academy
HKIS Aquatics co-curricular program, called HKIS Aquatics Academy, offers Lower Primary, Upper Primary, and Grade 6 School students five programs: Learn To Swim, Learn to Train, Synchronized Swimming, Junior Lifeguarding and Water Polo. These take place after school and on Saturdays at the Repulse Bay campus.
More information about these co-curricular programs can be found here:
The Learn to Swim (LTS) program follows the American Red Cross (ARC) and its levels. These swimming and water safety lessons are an extension to the students' curricular learning. By participating, students are able to retain important swim and safety skills, learn new ones, and achieve higher swim levels. For R1 to Grade 6 students.
The Learn to Train program continues stroke and skills development while being introduced to elements of using swimming for training and fitness purposes. For UPS and Grade 6 students who have completed ARC LTS Level 5 or above.
The Synchronized Swimming program is a fun way to increase your strength, endurance, flexibility and focus. Students will learn synchro skills and how to synchronize their movements with one another in patterns to music. For UPS and Grade 6 students who have completed ARC LTS Level 4 or above.
The Junior Lifeguarding program is designed to guide youth interested in learning more about becoming a certified lifeguard. It builds a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills used by professional lifeguards. It develops swimming skills and endurance, and teaches techniques. For UPS and Grade 6 students who have completed ARC LTS Level 4 or above.
The Water Polo program is an exciting mixture of basketball, rugby and swimming, for Upper Primary and Grade 6 students who have completed ARC LTS Level 4 or above.
Aquatics Curricular Program
All Lower and Upper Primary students take part in a learn-to-swim program during a scheduled aquatics unit as part of their curricular learning. A dedicated, specially trained team of HKIS swimming instructors and Aquatics Director prepare and deliver this program following the standards and guidelines of the American Red Cross (ARC).
