LOVE was All Around During Cookie Decorating at the High School

On Thursday, February 14th, the Boosters set up a cookie decorating station outside the HS cafeteria and students decorated to their hearts' content.  Pun totally intended, thank you very much.  You might think that digestive biscuits, frosting, and a whole slew of heart-themed pink and red sprinkles wouldn't set hearts aflutter up in the High School, but it did!!  Lots of laughs, tons of smiles and a few cheeky diabetes jokes were had while kids treated themselves to a little sugary Valentine's Day fun.  Dragon love is all around!

Holiday Basketball Hospitality and Support

Booster Club helps organize hospitality for our visiting teams over the Holiday Basketball Tournament. Thank you to the volunteers that helped create an amazing feeling of community and Dragon spirit at the gym over the holiday weekend.  Visiting coaches and referees had homemade baked goods and snacks, and free popcorn and Dragon tattoos were available to fans.  The Dragon pride was contagious and our visitors were very grateful so THANK YOU!

Holiday Basketball Tournament Varsity Player Visits

On Wednesday, November 21st, students at LP, UP and MS got a special visit from members of the HS Varsity Basketball teams.  In what has become a cool tradition prior to the HS Holiday Basketball Tournament, High School players greeted younger Dragons as they arrived at their respective campuses in the morning, high-fived and played pick up games to the delight of the kids.  What fantastic energy and school spirit across divisions!

Players: India Soranson Way, Lydia Harber, Anna Lobner, Selena Sun, Krish Shah, Sid Verma, Noah Leddel, Ben Cherry, and Ethan Alfert

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Welcome back, Dragon family!!  We hope you had an enjoyable summer and are geared up for a wonderful school year ahead.  We look forward to sharing the HKIS spirit with each and every one of you.

Last Thursday, the Booster Club wrapped up this year's annual Dragon Shop Back-to-School Sale.  Although at times the lines were long, the air conditioning seemed non-existent, and we were in school supplies up to our ears, overall the sale went amazingly smooth.  Why?  Because the HKIS community stepped up and volunteered hour upon hour to make the sale a reality.  The Dragon Shop relies on volunteer parents and students to give up their time to work at the sale.  We are so grateful to have so many willing--and FUN--volunteers.  We could not do it without your help.

Special thanks to Mrs. Amy Turner, our Dragon Shop manager, who worked tirelessly to create a wonderful and efficient BTSS this year.  We appreciate all of your leadership and commitment.  Congratulations and many, many thanks.

Booster Club Grants

Did you know that each year the Booster Club allocates grant funding to student and faculty applicants? All of the net profits from the Booster Club’s Dragon Shop must go back to the school. This year’s sales in the Dragon Shop saw an increase over last year, and we were able to grant $461,469 to faculty and student requests across all divisions—nearly $100,000 more than last year. All students and faculty are encouraged to apply for grants from the Booster Club and the applications for next year are already open online!

HS Senior Clap Out

On Friday, June 1, the High School surprised our Class of 2018 with a special "Senior Clap Out" where the faculty and underclassmen lined the stairwell and plaza to applaud the senior class as they were officially dismissed from HKIS for the last time before graduation. Booster Club was there to pass out popsicles and it was a wonderful, spirited occasion for faculty and students. Students milled about to take photos, sign yearbooks and take it all in. Thank you to our BC volunteers who passed out popsicles, which were perfect in last week’s heat wave. Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

Dragon Shop Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

On May 10, we hosted our annual appreciation luncheon for our Dragon Shop volunteers. With over 60 parents needed to operate the shop, we rely on these ladies and gentlemen to commit to a regular shift throughout the school year. Whether a Monday morning volunteer, a Friday afternoon volunteer, or anything in between, we could not run the Dragon Shop without their support. Our yearly luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to get together and celebrate the Dragon Shop volunteers as well as say farewell to those who are moving on. Spending time at the Dragon Shop is an amazing way to get to know parents from the HKIS community with whom you may not otherwise have the chance to meet. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer in the shop, or even give it a try at the Back-To-School Sale in August. The sign-up link is listed above...hint, hint!

President - Amy Clayton

Treasurer - Janet Chen

VP Dragon Shop - Ellen Loomis

VP Hospitality - Carrie Gammons

VP Spirit - Kara Laskowski

VP Grants - Lee Ann Verderese

VP Communications - Jennifer Howell

HKIS High School Hosts China Cup Soccer

On March 23-25, HKIS High School athletics hosted the spring China Cup soccer tournament on our Tai Tam field.  The Booster Club hospitality and spirit teams were out in full force, providing sno-cones to the students and fans on Friday, as well as providing fun HKIS tattoos for our most loyal supporters.  The BC both was open to serve the athletes and coaches--both the visitors and our own Dragons--with fruit and granola bars to keep energized throughout the tournament.

MS Spirit Week

While the High School was quiet with all of the students, faculty, and administrators away on Interim trips, Spirit Week in the Middle School was in full force.   MS students enjoyed several exciting events including Freedom Day with a visit from CNN, Extreme House Colors Day, and the annual, ever-popular Dragon Math house competition.  This past week, MS Students presented their SML projects to their peers and parents. Booster Club was around to support, providing Insta frames for spirit day, pencils for Dragon Math, and otter pops to celebrate the completion of SML.  Thank you to our MS Spirit team for always being there to do a little something special to help support all of the fun the MS brings.

UP Book Week Sno-Cones

Upper Primary students enjoyed Book Week and Pajama Day this past Friday.  Booster Club was there to serve up the sno-cones and join the fun. Kids gathered on the UP roundabout and hung out with Torch for a festive Friday, and had the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.  Sno-cones, pajamas, and a giant plush about a spirited day at school!

LP Field Day

On March 13th, Lower Primary students traveled to the HKIS Tai Tam field and had a wonderful day of games for their Field Day.  Booster Club was there serving up oranges and helping kids pose for Instagram shots with a special photo frame. Parents and kids enjoy this time together on the field in what has become a treasured tradition.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

Brrrr!  The frosty temperatures have been hanging on for the past couple of weeks and the Booster Club spirit team saw an opportunity to warm up our HS students during this frigid weather.  On Friday, February 2, the Booster Club set up a hot chocolate station outside the Dragon Shop and served yummy, steaming cocoa to very grateful HS students.

The kids were thrilled and enjoyed the special treat!  Thanks so much to our volunteers for coming out to spread the dragon spirit and help cultivate a community of coziness!

UP Christmas Delights

This past December our student and faculty musicians started a new tradition for the HKIS community to enjoy.

In the spirit of bringing music cheer to our UP and MS students in the last week of school before Christmas break, BC spirit hosted a three day long Christmas performances by our very own strings, band and choir students as kids and faculty arrived at school in the morning! At least 1,000 students from UP and MS must have passed through the entrance every day by bus or by car or on foot and what show stoppers they were! Special mentions to teachers Mr. Y, Mr. Lovett and Ms. Webster as well as student, teacher and parent volunteers who braved the cold and wind for over 30 minutes in the mornings:

Strings: Nadia Miller, Olivia Keenan,
Gil Yehudayan, Caleb Chung, Jenevive Won, Corinne Keenan, Emilia Werkun

Band: Aria Tahilramani, Collette Chang, Chloe Lee, Kayla Yang, Olivia Port, Damian Lee, Anjanette Lin, Tianzong Zuo, Ferdinand Scherer, Matthew Yung, Eva Kim, Morgan Hsu, Vivian Kahn, Isabelle Kao

Choir: Members of the UP choir and UP faculty

We will be back next year! See you all at the next BC spirit event!

48th Annual Holiday Basketball Tournament

Our Dragon spirit was roaring during the 48th annual Holiday Basketball Tournament. The Booster Club was there with snacks and treats for players and coaches, plus popcorn and tattoos for all of the fantastic HKIS supporters and fans. We are so lucky to have some amazingly enthusiastic spirit and organization amongst our Dragon family!

The boys' varsity basketball team celebrating their third place finish. After their eighth and final game, they took the bronze award beating Singapore American School for the second time. Way to go Dragons!

During HS flex time on Thursday, November 23, the Booster Club gave out hot cocoa on our first chilly day this year. We also had face paint available for kids to show their dragon spirit as they headed to the second HKIS basketball game of the day vs. Singapore American School. Pumpkin muffins, chocolate chip cookies, caramel brownies and strawberry cupcakes were just a few of the home-baked treats that the Booster Club organized for the visiting coaches and referees to enjoy during the tournament.

HS Basketball Visits LP and UP

On Wednesday, November 22, the LP students were treated to a visit from some of the players on the girls and boys varsity basketball teams. India Soranson, Mason Gammons and James Drake greeted the kids with high fives as they entered the school. The kids were especially excited to learn that their favorite gym teacher was actually the girls' basketball coach!

Likewise, the UP gate was a flurry with more Varsity players greeting the kids as they arrived at school. Selena Sun, Anna Lobner, Christian Kwan and Alex Lam represented the girls' and boys' teams and welcomed the school buses in Tai Tam. This year's new tradition of school-wide spirit visits to promote HKIS-hosted tournaments has been such fun for all ages. Dragon spirit runs strong, from R1 all the way through the Senior year!

MS Twins & Triplets

On Nov 23, MS Spirit Week sponsored Twin Day! The Booster Club helped celebrate how awesome everyone looked by taking photos using our new BC photo frame. We took loads of snaps of students dressed alike as twins and triplets! Groups of friends also joined in the fun and everyone enjoyed participating in the lunchtime photo shoot.

Dragon Shop Volunteer Appreciation

Did you know the Booster Club's Dragon Shop is owned and operated by parent volunteers? Well, it is! Our Dragon Shop volunteers typically work two shifts per month and sell uniforms, HKIS spirit gear, gifts and school supplies. Many of those volunteers also donate their time to Booster Club events. They are the smiling parents you see scooping popcorn at games and plays, they are the ones handing out sno-cones, oranges, and tattoos. Your Booster Club volunteers also help the HS Senate organize those willing to bake for events and encourage a feeling of school spirit and community at HKIS.

We took time in October to say thank you to our volunteers and get together for a coffee and a chat. We are a diverse group of parents and always have room for more volunteers, for one-time events or for as much as you want to be involved.

Varsity and Junior Varsity Players Visit UP and LP to Celebrate APAC Rugby Tournament at HKIS

To kick of the APAC Rugby tournament hosted at HKIS, Varsity and Junior Varsity rugby players visited both Upper Primary and Lower Primary campuses and greeted the students as they arrived on their buses. The younger students loved having the student athletes at school, and the athletes were all smiles as they high-fived and played with the little ones.

October Roundup

It has been a busy October for our Booster Club volunteers! On Saturday, October 14, HKIS hosted the VEX Robotics Competition. The Booster Club helped organize parent volunteers to provide homebaked goodies for all of the participants. Thank you for all who baked and delivered treats for the competitors! Our spirited mascot, Torch, also visited VEX, and he was very papular with the visiting teams, who got a kick out of joking around with our friendly dragon. Lots of fun, and loads of selfies!

Torch has been making the rounds this month, also spotted at the HS Community Gathering and APAC Rugby! If you are a high school student and would like to earn money for your club or team, you can sign up to act as Torch here.

APAC traveling athletes were well looked after by our volunteers, who sent them off with goody bags for their tournaments. Thank you to the BC hospitality and spirit committees for all of their efforts.
