Music has long been recognized as having significant benefits that enrich students’ lives and education. The HKIS UP Band Program provides an engaging music learning environment that focuses on developing instrumental music skills, general musicianship and ensemble experience whilst promoting collaboration, team and inter-personal skills. A thoughtfully developed curriculum using interesting repertoire and a variety of learning strategies guides students towards achievable goals. Everyone is encouraged to build an intellectual curiosity, robust discipline and creative thinking, whilst appreciating the arts and befitting from the relaxing and enjoyable attributes of music making.

The Upper Primary Band Program is an entry point for the popular and highly acclaimed music program at HKIS. Students can join the UP Band in Grades 4 or 5, and use their music skills and abilities to join the classroom based HKIS Middle School Band Program. Further opportunities could include joining the HKIS High School or Community music programs in later years.

Craig Lovett worked at HKIS as Middle School and Upper Primary Band Teacher for 12 years before launching MICRA Music. MICRA encompasses Craig’s specific music passions – teaching music and music instrument repair, and to explore his Saxophone performance, music arranging and other musical pursuits.

With music education degrees and teaching and conducting experience, including directing a commended Jazz Education program in regional Australia and lecturing in Music Education, Craig’s move to the adjunct Upper Primary Band Program through the HKIS ASA program will continue supporting the strong band tradition at HKIS.

Band students will enjoy instrument specific weekly lessons and participate in an ensemble experience. Throughout the year, students will learn about music and band concepts through workshops, rehearsals and concert performances.

A variety of band instruments can be studied in the program. More information about instrument choices and purchasing or loaning an instrument is available here http://www.micramusic.com/band/  All lessons will be held at the new Upper Primary School Campus. Band Program students are scheduled two sessions per week.

Chinese Drumming is an exciting percussion ensemble for middle school students that will have participants leading the Chinese New Year celebrations at the school.  Drawing on the rich history of Drums within the Chinese culture, students will learn the drumming styles and choreography to put on a spectacular show that always entertains the community over CNY. Students in this group do not need previous percussion experience – but must have a willingness to practice and rehearse their parts and be part of a team to create a professional performance.  Please note this is an externally provided program, is fee paying and requires around 12 students to proceed.

Classes will be Wednesday 3.15 to 4.15 and students may register here
