PROGRAM OUTLINEStudents will practice English skills within the context of task based activities while focusing on the unifying theme of making a difference in our community and the world. Students will practice skills related to leadership and citizenship, such as public speaking and consensus building. All activities are hands-on integrated experiences.
Each day of this 3-week program, students engage in six hours of various English instructions and one-hour of recreational activities.
Emphasis in this program is upon developing strategies to achieve understanding and expression. English language vocabulary unfolds with an exploration of affixation; sentences acquire clarity with attention to grammatical precision; and appropriate expression of opinion and negotiated decision-making is given rhetorical explanation within the context of western culture. Students will engage in analysis of a play as a basis for this development. They will learn to utilize library-based and on-line resources, evaluate their relevance and validity, and to cite resources used within their own work.
Many students in Hong Kong have difficulty expressing themselves impromptu on a variety of topics. The Speaking component of the schedule gives students the chance to build skills and practice this important element of western-style education. Students will practice persuasive speaking and drama on short impromptu and prepared pieces. A final pageant at the end of the course allows students to share their new skills with the entire group.
As future leaders of the city, each student will research the most challenging issues facing Hong Kong today and make a 10-minute presentation proposing solutions to these problems. Students will learn and practice to be powerful speakers, use a variety of learned techniques to show, tell and persuade their audiences. Students will use PowerPoint or similar program as an effective tool to express their opinions based on substantiated evidence.
This element of the course offers students the opportunity to participate in a series of activities involving mental, physical and emotional risk taking, and to develop students' leadership and communication skills. Safety, cooperation and achievement are essential to the program as well as an enhanced feeling of self-worth and the recognition that problem are there to be solved.
THE INSTRUCTORSHKIS teachers lead the English Language Leadership Program. While our instructors come from various areas of academic interests, they are committed to the education of talented students.
Since the focus of this program is on developing active learners and creative thinkers, instructors do not assign grades to students, instead they write detailed evaluations describing students’ level of participation and areas of growth.
