FAQ

Q

What does "PFO" stand for?

A

Parent Faculty Organization

Q

What is the purpose of the PFO?

A

As defined in the PFO’s Constitution & By-Laws, its purposes are:

to support HKIS in its efforts to provide quality education.

to build a sense of community among students, parents and faculty.

to provide a forum for the expression of views and ideas that are school wide in both concern and interest to HKIS stakeholders. (Views and ideas for the particular divisions will be expressed through the use of the PAGs.)

to foster communication between school and home through print and electronic media and open meetings and discussions.

to raise funds that support education at HKIS and the stated mission of the HKIS PFO.

Q

How do I become a PFO member?

A

You don’t have to apply to become a member. You are automatically a member once your child is enrolled in the school.

Q

What are the events run by the PFO?

A

The PFO runs four major* events, and many other specific events, each calendar year (not including approved divisional events throughout the year):
New Family Meet + Greet (August)
New Parent Breakfast (August)
Volunteer Information Coffee (September)
Pumpkin Festival* (October)
Chinese New Year Assembly* (January/February)
New Parent Lunch (January)
World’s Fair* (March/April)
Book Fairs* (First Term)

Q

How are the events run?

A

Initially, the Appointed Festival Coordinators seek parents for all positions of each event. For example, the Chinese New Year festival requires volunteers for Bake Sale, Games, Student Performances, Publicity and Arts and Crafts. Each of these activities is organized by a parent who coordinates other volunteers to help manage their piece of the event, thereby cascading the festival across the parent community.

Q

Where does the PFO get its funds?

A

The PFO raises funds through sponsorships, donations, and admission tickets of its festivals and programs.

Q

How do I contact the PFO?

A

The PFO temporarily is without phone, fax, or a physical office space during the Lower Primary construction. All communications can be mailed to:

HKIS PFO
1 Red Hill Road
Tai Tam
Hong Kong

Email: pfo@hkis.edu.hk

You can also reach any of the Board members via email.

Q

How do I get a PFO Directory?

A

The 2013-14 Directory was the last physical printing. As HKIS moves towards an online directory via DragonNet's PowerSchool, we encourage you to use the school wide and divisional contact information listed in the both the large and small PFO School Calendars.

Q

How does the PFO function?

A

The PFO is registered with the Hong Kong Government Registrar of Societies as a non-commercial, non-sectarian and non-partisan organization. It is governed by a Constitution and due process as mentioned therein. There are elected and appointed board positions. The Appointed Board meets each month. In addition, the Elected Board meets each month prior to the Appointed Board meeting. These dates are announced well in advance, and a secretary records minutes of the meetings. Ongoing projects are reviewed and upcoming events are discussed. Allocation proposals from faculty and staff are discussed. Budgets are sanctioned and financial statements are passed after due process, as per the PFO Constitution.

Q

How can I help?

A

The PFO is a voluntary organization run entirely by parents who work with great energy and enthusiasm. If you have the time or a special aptitude that can benefit the PFO, please do get in touch. Click here for more information about volunteering your time or skills, donating to and/or sponsoring a PFO event/activity.

Q

What can the PFO do for me?

A

The PFO reaches out to parents through parent coffees twice every year. You can raise concerns, interact with other parents and teachers and get to know the developments in your child’s class/grade/division. Parents find this an extremely useful forum. New parents who have moved into Hong Kong also find this a good point to begin networking and making friends.
