Overview
Today’s students are navigating a multicultural and globally interconnected world composed of individuals from different backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences. Research finds that intercultural competency—the ability to communicate and connect with people from different backgrounds with respect and empathy—is critical for success. Furthermore, there is a strong correlation between students' sense of belonging and their academic achievement.
In schools, most efforts to foster belonging fall under the umbrella of diversity. However, "diversity" is often understood in different ways by various school constituents, a dynamic explored by Dr. Gay in his TEDx Talk, "The Double-Edged Sword." With the omnipresence of media and technology, including social media and video games, today's students are growing up with increased anxiety and depression, diminished interpersonal and social skills, and unprecedented belonging challenges, ranging from traditional bullying to online relational aggression. So, what can parents do?
During this workshop, Dr. Derrick Gay will share the latest research on intercultural competency and belonging and its impact on learning and well-being. He will also highlight current opportunities and challenges related to belonging in K-12 international schools, informed by his research and leading efforts over the past 27 years in over 30 countries. Finally, he will provide strategies for parents to support their children in fostering open-mindedness and navigating belonging challenges.
