Overview

HKIS is offering Primary classroom teachers 4 math workshops with Caty Romero over 2023-2026.

  • These workshops provide participants with the knowledge, tools, resources and strategies to provide a balanced approach to teaching, learning and assessing math in early childhood, and elementary.

  • Using current research-based approaches to learning math, participants explore the essential components of student-centered math lessons where students demonstrate proficiency in mathematics through essential math practices including problem solving, modeling, and communicating & reasoning. 

  • Each workshop can be stand-alone


Session Outcomes

Workshop 4: Visual mathematics: Geometry and Measurement 

Participants will:

  • Engage with visual mathematics: Develop skills in teaching geometry and measurement. 
  • Effectively assign homework, extra practice, and challenges: Learn strategies to provide meaningful assignments that reinforce learning. 
  • Create rubrics for students and teachers: Design effective rubrics that enhance assessment and feedback. 
  • Analyze student work and use data to guide instruction: Utilize student data to inform and improve instructional practices. 
  • Implement concrete, pictorial, and zbstract Strategies: Build students' conceptual understanding through a variety of representations. 
  • Integrate the Math Practices: Develop learning experiences and assessments that incorporate The Math Practices. 

Focus standards: Operations and algebraic thinking (EY/ES) leading into Expressions and Equations (MS)


Speaker

Caty Romero

Caty Romero is an early childhood, elementary, and middle school mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment instructional leader passionate about learning and teaching mathematics through the lens of inquiry, modeling, reasoning, and communicating. Caty is currently the Director of Teaching and Learning at MYIS International in Bangkok, Thailand. Prior to that, she was the Early Childhood and Elementary School Mathematics Instructional Coach at Shanghai American School for 5 years where she worked in partnership with teachers to facilitate the development, implementation, and transformation of the math curriculum.

Caty serves as a contracted mathematics consultant at several international schools. In addition, she has facilitated workshops for international school teachers and leaders at various AASSA, NESA, EARCOS, SENIA, Learning 2, and ACAMIS regional conferences.

Note: This two-day workshop provides an immersive experience with focused sessions on fostering a growth mindset, designing assessments, building conceptual understanding, and integrating math practices.
